Climate Justice Friday: January 17, 2020

In honor of the weekly youth climate strikes and the urgency of the climate crisis, Illinois Initiative is taking action in support of climate justice every Friday. We call this campaign Climate Justice Fridays. We invite you to join us in taking action for climate justice.

This week’s climate justice actions include:

  • Letter writing. Write a letter to one or more of your elected officials in support of climate justice. Visit www.usa.gov/elected-officials to find contact information for your elected officials. ResistBot is also a quick and easy way to send letters to your elected officials simply by sending a message to ResistBot via Messenger/Twitter. We don’t have a sample letter yet this week, but we will in future weeks. Check our Facebook page and group for sample letters.
  • Local outreach. Do you know any local individuals or groups who might have suggestions for future Climate Justice Friday actions? Contact them and let us know what they say. We want to do as much as we can to support other people’s programs and needs related to climate justice.
  • Saturday Garden Work Party. Due to the unseasonably warm weather, Washington Street Garden is having a Saturday Garden Work Party this Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM. Community gardening is an important way for local communities to improve their own food autonomy, reduce their carbon footprint, and give everyone an opportunity to get to know their neighbors and the land. [This event happens on a Saturday, but we can let Saturdays have a little climate justice too, as a treat,]

If you take any of these climate justice actions, let us know! Telling other people that you’ve taken action for climate justice is itself an important form of action too. It breaks the “climate silence,” which is one of the biggest barriers to taking any sort of action on climate.

Thank you for your interest and support. We look forward to taking action for climate justice with you again next Friday!
